Hope is devoted to being a missional church through and through. To that end, the leaders have engineered the ministry in such a way that the missional focus always takes priority.
Currently, our missions program is run by The Missions Committee (TMC). TMC is headed by a local chair (Young Ko) and overseas chair (Annie June), and consists of over nine members that work throughout the year to build our missions program as well as to prepare for each year’s short-term trips. TMC is also led by Pastor Patricia Han, who gives the team spiritual and visionary guidance.
Oftentimes, missions is seen solely as an overseas endeavor. However, this could not be further from the truth. In Acts 1, when Jesus commissions the disciples to devote their lives to missions, He does not only tell them to go abroad. He tells them to serve locally (Jerusalem & Judea) and abroad (ends of the earth). Many churches, for various reasons, have constructed their missions programs with an overseas “bias.” This is not to say that the need overseas is not significant. Clearly it is. Nevertheless, living in affluent America, we can sometimes be blinded to the incredible suffering and need and broken lives right underneath our noses.
Consequently, Hope is dedicated to bringing balance to our missional efforts – to serve locally and abroad. That does not mean our resources will always be distributed in equal proportions among the various regions; however, it does mean we will take seriously the needs near and far and work faithfully to address them as best as we can. Strategically and because of our balanced missional vision, we have set up TMC with overseas and local co-chairs. These chairs, along with their teams, work collaboratively to build a missions program that faithfully serves the local and overseas missional efforts.
On top of this, the leaders have pledged to use a minimum of 10% of the church’s budget for missional efforts reaching outside the walls of this church.
It is our vision also to be a hub for training both long-term and short-term missionaries. As we develop and grow this ministry, we will eventually become a center where missionaries can be trained and sent. To accomplish this, we will of course take on significant lay and paid staff. By providing this hub-service, other churches will have access to an invaluable resource that can assist them in either partnering with us for the long-term or in developing their own missions program.
